  1. When Daniel ÓConnell was a member of the English parliament the English members did not like him. They agreed to poison him, so they invited him to a feast. There was an Irish girl working in the hotel. The members told the girl to put poison in ÓConnell's glass. The English did not understand the Irish language at all.
    Before they drank the wine the girl said to ÓConnell:-
    A Dhomhnail Úi Chonnaill an dtuigeann tú Gaodhluinn
    tuigim go maith a chailín ó Éirinn.
    Tá marbhú céad duine, ins an gcupán sin taobh leat
