On chalk Sunday the young girls used chalk the boys. On New Year's night the people in the towns and cities used put a herring up on a stick and beat it, and another crowd used dress a piece of veal up with ribbons and coloured paper and be dancing around it.
During shrove most people get married. On ash Wednesday people go before Mass to the Altar rails and the priest makes the sign of the cross on their foreheads with holy ashes to show us that we are but dust and into dust we will be turned. On Easter Sunday people eat more eggs than on any other day. On May morning people get up before the sun rises and make butter. That is called May butter and it is kept to cure sore teeth. On Saint John's night people light bon-fires in honour of Saint John.
