All Souls' Night - The table is laid, and the usual supper food placed on it. The tongs is placed at the right hand side of the fire, so that everything is in readiness for the coming of the departed Souls.
November 1st - Snap Apple night. - Apples are suspended on a cord from the ceiling, or placed in a tub of water, to be taken with the mouth, without placing, a hand on them. Nuts, or rice, are placed on a hot flag next the fire. These represent boy, and girl members of the company taking part. If the nuts jump out together, a marriage is to take place.
Lead is melted, and poured through the end of a key, held over a basin of cold water. The various shapes which the lead assumes, are then examined, and supposed to indicate what manner of living the future partner of the "girl", or "boy," will pursue. It is usual for each one to take his own portion of lead from the basin, and keep it throughout the following year.
Christmas - Each house is thoroughly cleaned down. Holly is hung on the walls. An angel is supposed to stand on each holly branch. The Christmas Candle is lighted at night-fall. In some houses two candles, and in others one on each window, to light the Blessed Virgin on her journey to Bethlehem.
