- The patron saint of Askeaton is the Blessed Virgin or Saint Mary. Many people of the district or called after the Saint.There are no monasteries connected with the saint, but the church which is now used is dedicated to her and also the schools. There are two Holy wells called 'Sunday Wells' dedicated to the saint. They are situated about two miles from Askeaton on the land of Mr Egan, and on the road between Askeaton and Ballysteen. They are called that because every Sunday morning and evening people used to go and pray by the wells', and also bath sore eyes and people say that when they (that) used to be passing the wells' they used to see all the(continues on next page)
