- Some years ago the "ellary Anne" a boat, sank an the river Deel, a few yards from a place called Gort. The "Savarana" another boat, also, struck a rock called the "Hern Rock". This boat was taking grain some place when it struck the rock. It was towed to shore by a man named John O'Shaughnessy and the grain was sold. There was a boy drowned in the "Canal" in Askeaton names Jack Mc Mahon. He was going home from school, and he went over the river and fell in.There was another man drowned while taking seaweed out of a boat at the Green.
