  1. There was once a hedge-school in Garden Hill under a man by the name of Mr Mulbrandon. He had a class of boys standing around him and one boy standing on the watch for the soldiers and on a wet day he would teach them in a cow-house. This man was a native of Castleconnell. Another man named Doyle had a school in the graveyard.
