- There was a hedge-school situated on the banks of the Shannon in a grove at the bottom of Lord Masseys field. The teachers name was Mr. Tom Bourke who was a stranger. The boys going to the school had to pay the master every week. The boys used slates to write on, and the master used large sheets of paper. The subjects taught were Latin, Irish and English.
