    But watch ! upon the river's bank
    Dark figures pass along,
    They join the silent watcher and
    They hurriedly converse,
    They whisper soft and earnestly,
    And hurriedly disperse.

    Not long have they been vanished
    when
    Again they reappear,
    With pick and shovels armed and
    That vessel - is it beer?
    If so, they are not drinking it,
    They're shaking it around -
    Perhaps they're ghosts of olden saints
    Are hallowing the ground.

    Within the ruin a light is struck,
    The candle's on the wall,
    Of coats and hats divested soon
    They're working one and all ;
