- Long ago people had their own home-made candles, soap and dyes.
When making candles, they got a mould made from tin or brass and shaped like a candle. Then they got a thread made from flax. They let the thread drop into the centre of the mould. Then they melted the tallow of a cow or goat and poured it into the mould. When the tallow got cold they pulled it out of the mould and it was a candle.
