    Oatmeal bread was invarably used and it was made like this:- A kettle of water was boiled and was mixed with oatmeal and a little salt and kneaded into a stiff dough, which was baked in front of the fire, propped up in front of the fire, on a little stool, the people ate the bread with butter. No meat except bacon was eaten. Salted herrings were the only fish
