  1. Several ruined castles remain around Portarlington one of the most interesting being Lea Castle situated on the banks of the Barrow about two miles outside the town. Lea was one of the seven territories of ancient Offaly and belonged to the O'Dempsey clans. The lands however were taken over by one of the Fitzgeralds shortly after the norman conquest and the castle was built about 1260.
