  1. The first national school in the parish was founded by Fr,O'Connell in 1862 who was parish priest of Portarlington. It was built in Killenard at the end of the present cemetery facing the wood,which was owned by Colonel Smith. This school was divided into two divisions one for the girls and the other for the boys. Thomas Mulhall a native of Killenard taught the boys and Mrs Hoey taught the girls. Thomas Mulhall was the school
