- Hurling and Football Matches
Rathnew and Laragh played a great game at Derrybawn about fifty years ago. There were twenty one men on each side. It was for the championship of the County, on that occasion Rathnew was beaten, they lost it by one point. In the shirts they played in that time.
The refereeing was done by blowing the neck of a bottle.
No hurling was ever played in our district. Handball was also another amusement in former times, but it is out of use now. Weight thrown was also another amusement, it was thrown in the bottoms.(continues on next page)- Collector
