    The face of nature dark and dim and wrapt in tribulation
    The songsters cease their tuneful notes at this awful revelation

    The Shannon seems to gush forth in tears of bitter anguish
    And from its basin to the sea resound a mournful cadence
    The swans and fish of that fine stream in gloom and grief retire
    All seem to say he’s dead today - farewell thou brave Maguire
