- Old Houses
Many old houses are still to be seen in this district. The houses long ago were built of sods and mud. The end of the houses were thatched.
The thatch was procured from straw or rushes. The chimney was made of wood. The fire in some houses was at the gable of the house. They used to have earthen floors.
The half doors were not common in the district. The means of giving light in olden times was rush lights
A two story house was very unusual in the district. There was no glass in the windows. Screen wire was used instead. The houses were usually built down in hollows to prevent them from being seen.- Collector
