  1. Marriages most frequently take place locally, before Advent, and during Shrove, but particularly on Shrove Tuesday. People do not usually marry in the seasons of Advent and lent.
    The month of May is thought unlucky for marriage, and there is an old rhyme that says "Marry in May, you'll repent the day" Saturday is also considered an unlucky day, because "Saturdays flit, short sit".
    There were some local customs connected with Shrove, such as eating pancakes, and bacon.
    Long ago matches were made more so than now. Money is often given as a dowery, but sometimes stock or goods are given instead. People often got married in the houses in olden times, and sometimes they do still, but they have to pay license to do so.
    There were a lot of customs observed on the wedding-day long ago. The bride usually wore, "Something old and something new.
    Somthing borrowed, and something blue".
    A wedding feast is usually held at the bride's or bridegroom's home. "Straw-boys" visit the house, and are so called because they dress themselves with straw, so that the guests may not know
