   and morter, the fire was on the hearth always against the gable end, there was one or two small apartments, there was always a small bed in the kitchen called a settle-bed, some of these houses had boards for a chimney, and more of them had rods platted, and covered with morter for chimneys, the floor was earthen or sometimes flags, the settle bed was always along the side wall of the house.

   Almost all the old houses of long ago were thatched with either rushes or oat straw, the walls were very low and made from mud or yellow earth, the windows and doors were very small, and the floor was earthen and sometimes flags the fire was at the gable on the hearth, the chimney was a wooden fixture called a brace through which the smoke ascended, a "settle bed" occupied portion of the kitchen which was placed against one of the side walls, its
