- (continued from previous page)and morter, the fire was on the hearth always against the gable end, there was one or two small apartments, there was always a small bed in the kitchen called a settle-bed, some of these houses had boards for a chimney, and more of them had rods platted, and covered with morter for chimneys, the floor was earthen or sometimes flags, the settle bed was always along the side wall of the house.
