- Now-a-days potatoes are mostly set in drills, but in the olden day they were always used for the digging of potatoes, but now diggers are used. Wooden spades and wooden ploughs, were used in the olden days.In this district "Kerr Pinks" are the best growing potato now: long ago Champions were the best. Nearly every farmer has three or four kinds of potatoes now.When the ground is ploughed, it is harrowed, and crossploughed. Then the drills are opened. The manure is shaken in the drill. The potatoes are dropped. Bagstuff is shaken in the drill, and then the drill is closed.During the summer the potatoes are sprayed now a days, but long ago the potatoes were never sprayed. Weeds grow on the drill. When they get thick they are pulled. Some(continues on next page)
