  2. In the year 1780 the people of Maudabawn had to leave the church and go to some remote place. They went to a very lonely valley. Not a road can be seen from the place. It is in Mrs Slavin's field. The altar was cut out on a rock. People stood on the hills around watching the English soldiers in their turn every Sunday. If they saw any coming they were to make signs. Today the altar is covered with whins and broom and it cannot be seen.
