  1. Hedge-schools were the schools that were in being before the National schools. Johnny Gacquin or "Johnny Villy" as he was called, owing to his crossness, was teaching in the hedge-school. The schools were barns and houses. The fires were at the back walls of the barns. The scholars sat around the fire on sods of turf. Primers were then used. The book was passed around the class. Reading, writing, and arithmetic were taught. Quills were used for
