- Long ago when the people were building houses they used to dig a big hole in the ground, and they used to fill this with clay or "daub" and then they used to build the walls. First they got some "daub" and then they got a bundle of rushes. They used to chop the rushes up very fine and mix them with the "daub". Then they mixed lime-stone with this also. When they were building the chimney, they used to get a bucket and fill it up with "daub". Then they used to make a hole through it and leave it there to get hard. On some houses there was just a bucket with no bottom. Outside there was no mortar on the walls but just the stone. There was no door but just three or four logs across from each jaem.
