When he was about to go out, they were coming up out of the garden. when he saw them coming he jumped into the big box and let down the lid. They came in and they raked the fire. They always left the door open, so they left it open this night. When they were about to go to bed one of them asked the other if he had locked the box so he came back to lock it. He never looked in. The man was very much afraid when the box was locked as he thought he would surely be got when & the box would be opened.
    They went to bed but not it was not the bed in which the father was supposed to be. The blood hounds were drinking the blood out-side. The man had a penknife in his pocket and he took it out and comenced cutting a hole in the box. He first cut a small hole and then he cut a big one in which he could put out his hand and caught the dog by the tail. as soon as he did this the dog ran out
