- There were not many shops in the country in olden times. People had to g to the nearest town when they wanted to buy of sell anything. Often they had to go long distance for goods. Buying and selling was held after mass. Fruit and sweets were generally sold, after mass. People used to come with carts to the church gate. They used to sell clothes and other things. This work is not done nowadays. In olden times people used not always give money in exchange for goods. They used to give calves and other animals. They also used to give work instead of money. There were different words connected with buying and selling such as "Bob", "Tanner", "tick" and change. These words were generally used as fairs markets. The markets were held in Ballymote. They are held there yet. When people want to sell anything they bring them to the fairs or to the markets. In olden times people used to go from house to house buying feathers and rags. There are some of them in the country yet.
