- The famine was in 1847. The year of the famine was a very hard year on the people. All their potatoes were black. They would have to dig from morning till night to get as many as would do their dinner.It was in that year the Indian meal came to Ireland and the people were only allowed a certain quantity of it.Hundreds of people were sent on the emigration ships to America and Australia. The workhouses were filled also. These were small houses built here and there through the country and people used gather into them for their supper and breakfast of Indian porridge, which a local man had charge over, to see that everyone got a little. The following year the Government gave a small amount of Champion potatoes to every farmer to start a new crop.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
