- The walls of old houses were built with mud and some stones. The roofs were made of oak sticks and thatch; the first thatch was bound with straw ropes. There were not many glass windows long ago because there was a tax on the glass. Then the windows were very small afraid of robbers and at night there were bags of straw put into the windows to break the blast. There was a settle bed in the kitchen, which was turned into a seat during the day. For light they had rush candles. They used strip the green covering off rushes, and dip them in gravy. Then they hung them to dry; when dry they were fit for use.
