- There are a number of cures obtained from herbs and plants which grow in the ground, either by boiling them and drinking the juice or by rubbing them on the skin. Onions are boiled and the juice is drunk to cure colds. The water in a forge in which the blacksmith cools hot irons is a good cure for chillblains.
The stings of nettles are good for rheumatism. The wine which can be made from dandelions is good for purifying the blood. The dandelions are pulled, and steeped in water for three days. Then the stems are taken out and the water is boiled. It is sweetened with a little sugar and the old people drink some each day.
The old water in a bog is very good for sore feet. - Every farmer sets potatoes around here. Some set half an acre, others an acre or two. At first the ground is ploughed and then harrowed.
