- My home district
The name of my home district is Trough (Truagh) . About fifteen families (200 people) live in it. They are mostly called McKenna or Treanor.
The McKenna clan is the more numerous, because the McKennas’ lived in this district long ago. The McKennas have all got nick-names such as “McKenna Feddar”; “McKenna Art “. :McKenna Neill” or ‘McKenna Roe” etc .
In the townland of Dromore five families named McKenna live.
Not many old people live in this district. My aunt is over seventy and can speak some Irish.
A Mr James McKenna lives in the townland of Dernaved, Emyvale and can speak Irish. He is ninety-eight years of age.
In former days the houses were more numerous in this district than at present. Many old ruins are to be seem.
My own townland is Ardguiney {Ardginny} which means “McKenna's Height “ It is very hilly.
Some of the townlands in my home district are mentioned in songs and sayings.
For instance, the song called “The Truagh woods so green” mentions the townlands Cavanmoutray, Dernaved and Favour Royal. In some verse(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
