- In 1832 the first public schools in Ireland were built. They were small buildings with earthen floors. After a time a great man named Vere Foster was responsible for getting wooden floors in the schools. Lyre school was built in 1844. It was then very small being only half the size of the present Girls' School. After some years a part of the present Boys' School was added to it and two further additions were made to it. Before the school was built the boys and girls of the district went to Banteer school.
