- Some time ago there were no schools in this district exept a few hedge schools. There was one sittuated longside our house. The teacher's name was Mr Carrig and he was a strange. He was in an outside home in the yard. The teacher lodged in a farmers house every night. The subjects they were learning were English, reading, spelling, catechism and tables. They had no Irish at that time. Pencils and slates they used. The teachers were paid very poorly. They had sods of turf and stones to sit on and they had also a blackboard. The teachers stayed a long time in the district. There was another school at Wixted's and the name of the teacher was Hillard and he had only one hand. There was also a school in Anna and the name of the teacher was Mr John Burke. He used to go to every scholars house every night. In Claremills there was another school, a night school and a day school.
