The daughter of Erasmus Smith married Mr Barry who took the name Smith Barry and afterwards got the title Lord Barrymore. The present Lord Barrymore owns most of the land of the town of Tipperary district. Nothing remains of the Monastery but an archway. - Athassal Abbey was founded by the De Burgos. Athassel Abbey was built on the bank of the river Suir about 1 1/2 miles west ward from Golden. There is supposed to be an under-ground passage from Athassel Abbey to Hoar Abbey. When the monks were leaving Athassel Abbey they went along the under-ground passage in single file and reached Hoar Abbey by the underground passage. They forgot an important manuscript and they passed the word from the first to the second and so on until it came to the last monk and he brought it with him.
