Kilns were built of stones, leaving a small opening at the bottom of them.
Then the peope used to light a big fire of turf and put limestone on top of the fire and keep on doing so till they had the kiln filled.
When all the turf and limestone were burned they took it out of the kiln and made it into mortar building purposes and scattered it on the land for manure.
