- My grandfather Joseph Rielly told me that the Catholics suffered much persecution during the Penal Times on account of their faith. Many stories are told about "Mass Rocks" or "Mass Bushes" throughout the country.The old people say that during the Penal Times mass was said on a fort which is situated near a by-road about six miles from Mullingar. There is no trace of a "Mass-Rock" on this fort now because the fort has been converted into a garden. The old story says that that while the priest said mass on the fort the congregation knelt on a fort which is on the opposite side of the road.
