But in those days it was not compulsory to go to school so that very few children attended and the teachers money was very small but he was made welcome to stop in any of the houses for a week or what ever time he wished to stay and he was kept free of charge. In this way some people got educated. Books were scarce and dear and it was only very few people could afford to buy a book at all but what ever books they had were handed down from one to another. The principal books were the Universal and the Catchism. Slates and pencils were much used but there were no steel pins or ink some old people made use of a quill for writing.
