- 1The Potato Crop
Potatoes are grown on nearly every farm in County Wexford. It is a valuable crop. The number of acres varies on every farm.
There are three statue acres grown on our farm, in the townland of Gurteen in the parish of Bunclody, each year. The number never varies. My father prepares the ground. The ground is not manured before it is turned up. The potatoes are sown in drills. First it is ploughed and harrowed. Then it is rolled and made into drills with a double board plough, the drills being six inches wide. Wooden ploughs were used about fifty years ago. Spades were used for digging, the potatoes long ago. They are bought in a shop now, but they were made locally. The fair sized potatoes are the best to sow. They will grow better than if cut.
Sometimes the local people help in sowing the potatoes. They(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
