- There are two forges in the parish of Denn. Tom Smyth and Connor Reilly are the black-smiths. Their people were smiths many years before them. One forge is situated at a crossroads near Ballyjamesduff and the other is about three miles from the town, on a hill.
The forge is a large-sized shed. The roof is made of galvanized iron. The door is a large one so that horses could go in easily. There is one fireplace in it. The bellows is made of wood and leather. It is worked with a handle that is moved up and down.
The smith used an anvil, a hammer, a chisel, a cutter, pinchers and other implements. He shoes horses and asses. He repairs farm implements such as ploughs, harrows, spades, shovels and axes.
