The Settlebed
In the country houses the settlebed was the principal article of furniture in the kitchen. It was placed against the wall opposite the door. It was used as a seat by day, and as a bed at night. When folded up in the daytime it held the feather tick, and the bed clothes. These settle-beds are still to be seen in many country houses.
Meal-Bin
A large wooden box called a meal-tin was to be seen in most kitchens. It was about four feet high and three feet wide and had a flat lid.
The farmer got his oats ground into meal in the early part of the winter, and the meal was stored in the bin. It was usually kept near the fire.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
