- When the potatoes are about to be planted the medium sized potatoes are selected and each is cut in two parts. it is generally the women who do this work and they are very careful to leave one eye in each part. The seeds are then ready for planting. In the winter the farmer picks the seed potatoes and he puts them in boxes and puts them in on a barn loft until there comes a nice bud on them then they are ready for planting in the spring this is called sprouting potatoes.
