  1. Once upon a time there lived a poor boy in France. One day he went to a rich man's house to ask for a job. The boy was very poorly clad and he explained how poor he was to the rich man. When the rich man heard his story he said "I don't think I want you now but if there is a vacancy in my house I will let you know of it. The little boy made a bow of thanks, and went away. Weeks past and the boy could find no work. Then one day as he was walking along the road he saw a pen, and he picked it up, and stuck it in his coat. Not long after he received a letter from the man offering him a job as a clerk.
