The belief in forge water is that the strippings of the cow (that is the last of the milk taken from the cow) diluted with forge water was a cure for "Decline" which meant T.B. but that was just the primitive idea for an iron. Yes in the old days smiths were "paid in malt" as well as in "meals".
    The news and gossip of the day is still disgussed in forges.
