    was left on the ridges save the old turnip stumps. Every evening a widow's son came over the fence into Wardon's garden to gather what stumps remained to provide a frugal meal for himself and for his mother. The diligent "Crags" knowing this determined to catch the boy and chek him, so one evening he waited until the boy came along. In he scrambled over the fence and began to gather the stumps as usual but "Crags" coming out from his hiding took up a furze root and catching the boy roughly by the arm he thrashed him severely so much so that on going home, he died. Years rolled by and the day came when "Crags" was forced to go about and beg, and on one occasion when he was footsore and hungry he went into the house of an old feeble widow, the mother of the boy whom he had beaten so cruelly. The old woman, even though she knew who it was who begged alms of her, gave him what she had, a basin of butter-milk and potatoes.
    Besides the Blands who lived at Derryquin Castle there was another family who lived at Druimona and who owned some land. This family was very much opposed to Fr. Walsh an enthusiastic priest who was the Sneem curate at the time. One one occasion as Fr. Walsh was returning after he had said Mass at Tahilla, he met the Blands going to their service driving in a coach and four.
