- Bread Making
My grandmother Mrs Kate Dobson aged 86 years, of Ruskey told me the way she made oaten bread in her young days.
First she got oat meal and some flour, salt and water, then she made this into a dough next she swept the hearth and baked the cake in front of the fire, she also used to bake the cake on a griddle. A griddle is a round flat pan with two handles.
There is also another kind of bread called boxty, first she got some large potatoes washed and peeled them next she washed them again after peeling and grated them, Then she got some soda, salt, buttermilk and flour and mix all together she then got some butter and put it on a griddle or pan when the pan would be warm enough she would pour on some of the mixture and bake it.Marion Carney
