My mother told me that St. Barry was born in Co. Leitrimand came over the Shannon to live in Termonbarry. The St. built in Kilbarry graveyard what they called in old times the seven Churches and one called the dark house.
It was supposed that anyone that was insane and slept in that dark house got better. The St. also built Whitehall Catholic church and brought the stones that built it across the Shannon in a stone boat that stands now in the chapel yard with St. Barry's statue standing in it. It is said that St. Barry came from Termon over to a place called Carrigeenbawn after some spirit or serpent as it was called.
The serpent on St. Barry's approach made for the lake call Kilglass and as the serpent was just beside the lake St. Barry knelt down and threw his staff, and struck the serpent and killed him. Where the St. knelt a well sprung up after a while the old people(continues on next page)- Collector
