    what present would he give the child and he said he had not anything to give her. They said to give her the calf that the red cow in the field was going to have. The man said alright, and he went back to the field and the cows were there and they did not go near the potatoes. The man went home with the cows and he never told his wife what happened. The cow calved and the calf she had was a heifer. When she was three years old she was going to calf and one eveing when the man went for the cows he found her dead in the field. When the wife heard it she was very sorry and the man told her that the calf did not belong to himself that he belonged to a baby that he stood up for. The wife never knew what happened until then.
