It consists of three parts namely : the handle, the treadle, and the spade.
The handle and spade are bought separately and the treadle is made by the local carpenter, who puts in the spade.
When the stalks are well above the ground the earth is raised to them by means of a "drill plough". They are sprayed two or three times with a solution of blue stone and washing soda. The spraying machine is taken on a man's and he walks up and down between the drills spraying one drill each time.
Before spraying machines were common, farmers used a broom for spraying the potatoes.
Potatoes are dug when they are fully grown. The big seed is picked by itself and these are called "fadhbáns". The small potatoes are called "crickanes". These are given to pigs and fowl.
Long ago the potatoes were set in ridges. First the manure was drawn out and spread over the field. Then the ridges were made and they were about five or six(continues on next page)- Collector
