sods in width. These sods were broken with a grubber. This was called hacking. Boys and girls came with máilins full of skillanes and they made holes in the ridges with spades, One boy came after the spreaders and closed the holes with a dung-fork or shovel. When the stalks were above the ground the farmer dug the furrows with a spade. He next raised the earth to the stalks and after a month it had to be raised to them again.
