  1. There was a football match played long ago between two parishes, namely Banteer and Glantaine in an inch by the blackwater near Mallow. There were twenty-one at each side. Those were the best men from both parishes. There were no Gaelac rules at that time but what ever side would carry the ball to their own village would be the winners. The Banteer side carried the ball to their own village across the country. Those who were playing in the Lyre team were, Mick Murphy, Jack Singleton, Dan Cronin, Jermiah Murphy and Patrick Gardner. The players were not dressed like those playing football at the present day but dressed like working men. The bladder of the ball was made of a cows bladder and it was shaped round There were no goal posts used in oldens times when playing ball.
