- Long ago there was a famine in Ireland in the year 1847 and that year was called black 47. At that time the Irish paid high rents to the English landlords, and they sold wheat and oats to make it and if they did not pay it they would be thrown out on the roadside. Potatoes were the staple food of the Irish people that time. They had the potatoes gathered into heaps and one night they all rotted, and two or three baskets remained good and in the morning they picked the good ones and stored up until it was time to sow them, they shook them like(continues on next page)
