- In olden times there were very few roads and most travelling was done on foot across the country in paths or boreens. There was a boreen going from the western end of Cahercanivan through Shyan and Clonwhite and on towards Mullagh. The people used asses and baskets for drawing turf. The people used to carry up to one hundredweight on their heads. There was a "Board of works" road leading from Clonredden to Lisnaliogane. Some of the local women worked at hacking stones for this road at a 1d per day without their keep, Peigín McMahon of Shyan was one(continues on next page)
