- Long ago the houses were made of mud. The walls were made of mud and the rafters were made of bog-deal and then it was covered with mountainy sods and then it was thatched with rushes. There was one room and a kitchen in the house. There were usually two windows and one door in the house. The chimney was thatched with rushes which was called a basket chimney. The floor of the house were all mud. It was a usual thing at that time to have a bed in the house which was called a Settle-bed and a camp-bed or two in the(continues on next page)
